However, it certainly is not, The Thick Black Theory has its origins in the writings of Li Zongwu (1879-1944), a failed bureaucrat in the late Qing Dynasty.

  1. Personal Development

Li felt that the path to success lay in the pursuit of unbridled selfishness and narcissism without any concern for the welfare of others (having a black heart), while hiding that fact through deceit and rank hypocrisy (having a thick face). While some people in Chinese history (indeed, in Western history as well), may have behaved in this way, such behavior was never held up as virtuous or even wise in traditional Chinese thought. However, Li and Chin-Ning Chu would have us believe that there is virtue in being wicked, and that being wicked has always been acceptable in Chinese society. Chin-Ning Chu tries to buttress her argument by claiming that many successful people in Western history have in fact utilized the same strategy. The problem is that none of her examples can even withstand the most cursory scrutiny.

Her examples were by and large not acting selfishly and were often quite clear in their motivations. Their faces were not thick, and they certainly did not have black hearts. One could argue that the Thick Black Theory is actually a restatement of Machiavelli's philosophy. However, there is a crucial difference between the two. In Machiavelli's philosophy, the prince may hide his motivations and may at times act selfishly, but it is always for the good of the state, and therefore for the people living in the state. As much as Chin-Ning Chu may try to protest otherwise, at heart Li's theory is concerned purely about personal success.

It is all about gaining power for oneself and imposing one's will upon others, and not about the betterment of society. Indeed, a person with a true thick face and black heart would feel that other people exist purely to serve him and for his personal benefit. How could a society filled with such people advance and find prosperity? Chin-Ning Chu tries but fails to explain how living according to the Thick Black Theory makes for a better world. In the end, all we are left with is a roadmap for being a selfish bastard in order to find personal success.

Personal Development

She gave speeches and conferences on variety of subjects in business development and success in the personal life. She has been developing a system Thick Face Black Heart, which is based on the very ancient philosophy, on how to make yourself be more efficient to the outside world. This book is one of her many ventures and it is the first one I had a chance to read. Thick Face is the way that the others perceive us. Black Heart is the way we act and what measure we are willing to take to achieve and accomplish Thick Face.

In the Asian philosophy, Thick Face, the way the others see you, your honor and your face is very important factor. To Asian people, loosing a face is worst then loosing a fortune. There is a little story in the book, about an ancient Chinese warrior. One day on his way home, two hooligans, who wanted to cause trouble, confronted him.

They said, that the young man should fight them or crawl on his hands and knees back to the village. The young warrior got on all fours and crawled all the way back the village, embarrassing himself in front of everyone. He lost his face in front of people and had not proved himself being worthy. Later on, that young man while fighting the enemy’s army proved to be one of the greatest Chinese heroes. The moral of the story is, that for the young man to prove his Thick Face, he had to fight an unskilled person, whom he would have easily defeated and probably killed. So, he felt that to exercise the Black Heart to achieve his honor, he would rather show it in the battle and not do it against someone who is not worthy.

There is a way we can achieve our personal Thick Face, without exercising the Black Heart, unless absolutely necessary. For example the doctor performs a surgery and in order to make someone feel better, he has to exercise a tremendous amount of Black Heart in order not to feel like he is hurting a person at the moment. A manager has two fire a few people in order two save the jobs of hundreds. Even though someone might say that it is a cruel way of doing things, but in order to achieve a proper level of success, the person has to use force of, what some might call, an unethical measures. In modern western society, we put a lot or enthuses on measuring personal success by the amount of income a person has generated. There is a lot of pressure from the outside and within on how we measure our personal achievement. In the eastern philosophy, success is a measure of personal achievement.

The success is directly related to the accomplishment of one’s goals. May it be a personal satisfaction, a task of some sort or a financial gain, but it is within a person to set that standard for him or her self. The book also uses a variety of metaphors to explain how to implement the information and posses a proper balance of Thick Face Black Heart theory. One of the ones the author stresses out is about a Fox and a Tiger. The Fox is a small animal, who is not as noticeable in the woods and can easily be killed by other bigger and stronger animals.

The Fox knows how to associate herself with a Tiger, therefore creating an image of being in the company of a much larger beast. Even if the Fox is not directly associated with the Tiger, the perception that the Tiger cares about the Fox's well being, makes the Fox feel safe and protects her from the rest.

In the real life we can always use the same methodology in our business and every day life. When we associate ourselves or create an image that we are associated with an important or more powerful entity, the others are fearful and more inclined to take us seriously. We can make the others, whether it is in business or in friendships take us with a greater level of respect, because we perceive, that a much larger and stronger force is backing us. The basic idea in the nutshell behind the book is that we have the power within us to develop a winning, efficient and self-motivating persona, which will be more appealing to the outside world and ourselves. How much will we be willing to contribute in order to do it? Is everyone capable of demonstrating the Thick Face Black Heart theory? Can people create their own limitations and except them, and what it takes to break out from the every day situations and get the most for our personal satisfaction without hurting others.

The book uses a lot of famous quotes by great philosophers, thinkers and leaders. There is definitely more then what can be laid out in this opinion. I have never seen a book, where the content of personal motivation and self-achievement was explained in such great detail.

This book is not for self-motivation or for business success, it is about life and how to live it to the fullest potential. I was told that the first time you read this book, only 10% of information would penetrate and stay in your head. It is absolutely true. I will definitely have to read this one again, to get more out of it.

Meanwhile, suffice it to say that I myself have read the book multiple times-and I am clearly not alone in this. Thick Face, Black Heart is a masterpiece of contradictions. Yes, it’s a book for business people-yet it’s deeply and satisfyingly philosophical.

Yes, it’s “theoretical”-yet it’s filled with fascinating illustrative anecdotes, enlivened by the voice of a natural storyteller. Yes, it’s serious, cerebral, and complex-yet it’s a bona fide page-turner! Even if you feel you’ve had enough of motivational books, you may want to give one last look at this one. Sometimes these eastern mysticism/self-help books make me feel mean.

It's really a hodge-podge of things. Like scattershot. There's no coherent philosophy here. But, now pay attention, there are a lot of very good ideas here. Know the churchy type? How's this (Chu's) take on that: For a truly spiritual individual, the path of spirituality is like walking on a razor's edge; it is a diligent pursuit of one's perfection. However, for others, the pursuit of spirituality is merely a vague notion; it actually is a pretext, an excuse to practice inertia and avoidance of life's challenges.

Take that you spiritual phonies! (Not you, well.) Want some intensity?

Within each one of us, we have this ever-present suspicion that we are much greater than our circumstances. The potential for who we are and what we could be is so vast that we have not begun to scratch the surface. We know we will not find security within us until we have touched all the Void with our mind and our soul. If that doesn't get you staying on your diet or hanging with your exercise program nothing will. Have enemies?

(Yeah, the karate-chopping vibe is never far off in this book. ) That's a bad thing, right? The battle with the cunning and ruthless often is not about conducting a battle with outside forces. Encountering the cunning and ruthless stimulates the dormant strengths within us and allows us to bring forth extraordinary abilities that we are not in touch with under normal circumstances. Think Leno vs. The Road Runner. Would any of them achieved the heights they did without the other?

I could go on forever but since you've already read longer than you intended I'll close with this last one. It's from a section on crisis. ( the true nature of crisis is an opportunity) Without the strength to endure the crisis, we will not see the opportunity within. It is within the process of endurance that opportunity reveals itself. Opportunity always exists within a crisis situation, but when we lose heart in a devastating crisis, we are blinded by our emotion.

When we can calmly endure the unendurable, the opportunity for a better alternative surfaces and reveals itself. Think about it—the times of overwhelming emotional stress blind us, bind us, render us immobile. If we can somehow manage to stay conscious, to think clearly through those crises we can discover great opportunities. Thomas Edison said, There is great value in disaster. Yes, and in Thick Face, Black Heart, as well.

This is an amusing and interesting book, presenting numerous social and personal relationship tatics - a combination of Machiavellian and ancient Chinese philosophies - that I find starkly contrast with my values and principles, but seem applicable in various 'fish-eat-fish' situations in this complex world. However, generally it makes me feel that if I were to follow the advice, there'll be little left to say about me than self-interest, selfishness, and narcissism. It doesn't feel right to me to win at all costs.

Amusing, but coolheaded; cold and warm, hard and flexible, the book reminds me of Salinky's 'Rules for Radicals': a goal fulfilled is the only target; it doesn't matter what means. Perhaps it is why some books are interesting and potentially dangerous at once. If you are the person who already consumed much western (American) self-help philosophy, this book is almost the contrast. Take the time to muse on the advice in the book. It is very engaging and will hit your head big. Fight back when you have been wronged, Find your inner warrior and conquer all in your path.

This book provided an honest and refreshing insight into how the world and its complex human relationships work. It is very no-nonsense and this is clearly expressed through its simple and rigid sort of writing. You may find that some advice needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, but overall, the book is the sort of life manual you wished someone had told you about - not because it offers something you have to acquire, rather, it offers something that you've known to be true all this while.
