Would like to know where I can find the dates of manufacture, by serial number if possible, of Remington 870 Wingmaster shotguns. Thanks, Harry.
I believe that serial numbers ending in M are magnum receivers, but it's late and I'm sleepy I just copied this from the RimfireCentral/Remington forum: For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around. Remington serial numbers are a mess. The variables include a year-range related prefix, the serial number, and a model-related suffix.
I have two 870s that Remington CS people have repeatedly told me they have no records for.the numbers don't exist. Well, that's obviously not true at my end, which means there's something really wrong with the records their CS people have access to.

BTW, I'm not slamming their CS people - they are consistently polite and diligent and patient. The problem is the factory records, apparently.
Remington Serial Number 700
They won't express the thoughts above ^^^ in exactly those words, but I've spent a lot of time talking to various CS reps and they concede that their records are, ummm, sub-optimal, and they will state that this is the reason that you can't do an online s/n look-up. The last letter in the serial number on modern Remington shotguns is the receiver code. It tells you what shells the receiver was set up at the factory to handle. It's the location of the ejector that makes this determination in 870s, and a 12 gauge 870 set up to handle 3' shells at the factory has a serial number that ends in M. 870s have had new ejectors installed that allow them to handle 3' shells, however, so serial numbers can only be relied upon to determine factory original status. Remington 870 Wingmaster Serial Numbers
Here is some information that you can get from you serial number after 1921 Remington's manufactured after 1921 have a code located on the left side of the barrel near the frame that identifies the year and month of manufacture. Does this coding system work for shotguns too? It says it does, but I find no codes stamped on my barrel that look like what's described here. I have an 870 Wingmaster in excellent condition w/a 28', Modified choked barrel that has a 2-3/4' chamber.
There are various stampings around the barrel, such as an 'H', but it's all by itself with no other marks that look like they would go with it. The serial number begins and ends with the letter 'V'; would that help? I'd like to know when it was made, can anyone help??
